Chokhor Duchen:
Celebrating the Buddha’s First Teaching

Wednesday, July 26 from 6pm to 9pm
at Jewel Heart Center

We are happy to announce that Ven. Robina Courtin will join us in celebrating Chokhor Duchen, an auspicious day that commemorates when Lord Shakyamuni Buddha first began teaching the Dharma. On this day, karmic results are multiplied by one hundred million, as cited by Lama Zopa Rinpoche from the Vinaya text, Treasure of Quotations and Logic.

On this special day, let’s generate vast merit by coming together as a community to make offerings to the Three Jewels, do practices advised for Kyabje Lama Zopa Rinpoche’s good health, and recite the Guru Shakyamuni Buddha Puja.

Chokhor Duchen also marks FPMT’s International Sangha Day and provides an opportunity for the lay and monastic communities to come together in recognition of our interdependence. It is especially meritorious to make offerings to our teachers and the Sangha on this holy day.

Please join us for some or all of the evening!

Date and Time:

Wednesday, July 26 from 6pm to 9pm

6:00-7:30pm: Recitation of “Dependent Arising: A Praise of the Buddha” and the Vajra Cutter Sutra
8:00-9:00pm: Guru Shakyamuni Buddha puja
*Please see below for more information on “Dependent Arising: A Praise of the Buddha”, Vajra Cutter Sutra and Guru Shakyamuni Buddha puja.

Note: Although Chokhor Duchen falls on Thursday, July 27, according to the late Ven. Choden Rinpoche, one of Lama Zopa Rinpoche’s teachers, observation of auspicious days should be according to the date in India, not the date in one’s home country. Therefore, we will celebrate the holiday on Wednesday, July 26.

Guru Shakyamuni Buddha Puja

from 8:00pm to 9:00pm

During this puja, we rejoice in the Buddha’s numberless virtuous actions, both in his previous lives as a bodhisattva and in his life as Shakyamuni. The puja includes an extensive version of the seven-limb practice through which we can purify our negative karma while accumulating extensive merit.
